Gathering of the Two-Six - Kali

This is my 200th post (yay!). So to celebrate I want to share another art piece. Alright, time to get into the details of this latest art project.

Pardon the quality a little, as you can see I had to inelegantly merge a quartet of drawings. It honestly looks a lot better on DeviantArt.

To be honest, it's not really the "latest" as in the one I've started most recently, only the latest in terms of the one I've finished most recently (or at least come closest to finishing most recently). The Izanami one I shared earlier this week was started much more recently than this piece. As I've noted before, the original Drusilla of my story was based mostly from my own imagination, but inspired by a picture I saw of an anime-style character years ago. For the most part that is the hair style I have always maintained for Drusilla/Kali. To see what that original hair-style looks like, visit the Drusilla Arenzai share I made last September.

A few times I have messed around with her hair style a little just to create a different look. For the Christmas Card/Drusilla's Christmas Ball, you may recall that I gave her voluminous twin-tails.

In this one, which predates the Christmas one in terms of when I started it, I added a good bit more of the design of the character who came to be the reinforcing basis of Drusilla's persona, Arachne of the manga/anime series, Soul Eater. As such I gave her a series of nesting buns, with the sorta spider-like thing Arachne wears in hers. The original also had a very long, curvy, (ahoge? bang?) protrusion of hair that reached from her forehead to about thigh length. Thematically she's rolled that long bit of hair with the rest to form the extra buns.

Continuing with the Arachne theme of things I gave her the signature super long sleeves from Arachne's dress. In my original plan I was going to have the entire dress mimic Arachne's, but then I changed my plans and thought of leaving the chest and neck bare, without the spiderweb design Arachne sports. In this final version I decreased the amount of cleavage a little bit by virtue of that inverse flare design. The bottom of the dress is based on the dress worn by Elizabeth from Trigun (see episode Lost July). The butterfly-like appearance of the bow has me considering adding a unique touch to further re-engage the allusion to the spider theme for Kali with a spider web print. I haven't decided if I'll go through with that yet.

The shoes are nothing special. After seeing these I considered having Drusilla sport them, but they strike me as more something for a beauty conscious sort like Athena/Hancock or someone obsessed with a regal image like Hime, so I might give it to one of them. The fan is a major prop for Drusilla in the Cromwell Universe, non-existent for the Drusilla of the Anzushiro Universe, and in-between for Kali. Again, it is based on Soul Eater's Arachne's fan.

Finally, as I mentioned in the teaser, Drusilla, somewhat more so than the others of the Two-Six, is supposed to represent beauty, intrigue, and inhumanity. All of them can display physical characteristics that speak to this side of them, but Drusilla is meant to present them outwardly more often and more dramatically. That is why her body proportions are what they are, her legs being noticeably long, as well as her neck and fingers. Her eyes do not show normal pupils but slits like a cat or a snake. I considered going for a spider's eyes, but that would have been pushing the inhuman concept a little too far for this particular piece. Also, her ears are small and pointed, again, not quite what a normal human's ears should look like. It's all for the idea that she should look like a beautiful woman, but with something seeming off.

The last bit is the background piece to the right. In the final completed Gathering of the Two-Six piece, Kali here is the last figure on the right among the Two-Six. Throughout the image will be the "beast familiars" of the ladies, creatures that represent the ladies as their familiars. As can clearly be seen the "bird" is on fire. It is, in fact, a phoenix, one of the familiars. From Kali's appearance and everything I've said of her, surely you can imagine that it is not her familiar.

The bird I used for this phoenix is the Princess Stephanie Bird of Paradise - yes, as you can see by the link, that is its name and it is a real bird. Obviously the flames were added on, a somewhat difficult task as I am shockingly terrible at drawing flames. The bird's perch is an original design I fashioned, nothing special there. The base is as it is so that the perch doubles as the bed for a certain other familiar. The empty web on the perch is an additional nod to the spider familiar and its master.

The baseboard and wainscoting, was added to better create depth to the image and not leave so much empty space. Seeing the final product I think I might need to add something to the wall so that it's not just blank like that too.
