Getting Stuff Done

Seems like I've been spinning my wheels since the website launch a couple weeks ago. Hardly even seems like it's only been a couple weeks. But, things are progressing. The website was updated last night for a new story excerpt.
In the time I haven't been posting here on the blog, I've mostly been working in the real world. My work schedule has been a tad funky relative to what it was, mainly because of a shift in responsibilities. The end result has been a loss of personal time that I normally had for all this stuff. That's life, and since this doesn't pay me anything, I can't well put it ahead of my actual work.

That being said, it's not as though I've had no spare time at all. Much of it has just been spent on things of more immediate interest. Normally I'd have something to say about the international situations right now in the Ukraine and Middle East, but frankly it's so frustrating I don't know how to put it into words really. I could talk about the immigration "crisis" on the border in the States, but with the Republican Party offering nothing in terms of a credible counter-narrative, it's like trying to explain to a brick wall that crayons and paint are different.

What have I been doing? I've played Ace Combat Infinity a bit. By a bit, I mostly mean the amount of time it takes to use up the trio of supplied fuel units you get a day. On a "good" day, that means taking about three minutes to get into a room for co-op mode, another minute or two for it to fill up, and then doing a mission, repeat sans the bit of getting in a room. Unfortunately that usually means playing out your fun in just a matter of a half hour or less. A bad day means frustratingly trying for 15-20 minutes to get into a room, only to sit and wait another 5-10 minutes for it to fill up, only for the host to then decide to close the room, leaving you the frustration of repeating that process a couple more times just to get through one mission.

Either way that leaves some time to do other stuff, which had mainly been me returning to my favorite pastime of writing and drawing. I've got a nice summertime picture of Drusilla I might share next week. I originally planned on making it a Christmas in July celebratory picture, but that plan fell apart, again because of the constraints of time. Still might do it as a "Tropical Christmas" or something, though it dawns on me that would mean two years in a row doing a picture of Drusilla for a Christmas themed work.

Which gets back to the writing side of things. My efforts have not been particularly focused. I've mainly just picked up on loose ends about the place. That's mainly been with the Cromwell Universe and the First Sun Saga. I've also done a little more work on another Looking Glass series I haven't talked about much yet, Spirit Files. I'll talk more about that next week when I think I'll be furnishing an excerpt from that to read as well.

The excerpt I've shared on the Cromwell Universe is one I've basically edited. I wrote it a while back. The part of the story I've been working on recently takes place a tad earlier in the overall story, but touches on this excerpt, hence why I felt inspired to share it.

The excerpt, Love and String Theory, essentially takes place long after the previously published Cromwell story chapters. Yugi and Drusilla are sitting and talking with one another after an incident which I will remain mum on for the time being. Their brief discussion on something as exotic as the theory of how to conceptualize the form of the universe is meant to expose how awkward it is for them, particularly Drusilla, to talk about love. The discussion abruptly turning into one where basically it sounds like Drusilla making a confession highlights that the feelings and thoughts she describes are ones that have been bubbling inside of her, but which she can only express suddenly and all at once after dancing around the subject a bit. It is meant to contrast with talk like that between them in Chapter Two of Book of Cromwell, where they can speak in obtuse, suggestive euphemisms, but never come out and state plainly what their feelings are, having to dress it up with allegory and word play.

At any rate, I'm putting some more finishing touches on the next chapter of Book of Cromwell, and hopefully will share that soon. The excerpt on my website, bookoftheshadows.com, is also a bit of an experiment. If you can, try reading it and let me know if structurally in terms of layout and navigation of the brief writing, how it works out (readability, ease, etc.) and let me know your opinion. If this format works, I'll next try doing an entire chapter, eventually working my way up to entire books. In the meantime, the next chapters of Book of Cromwell and First Moon Book III will be on Fanfiction.net sometime in the next 30 days. Look forward to it.
