Character Intro - Runa and Kenshin
We're rolling right along with the character introductions. Today we have the siblings Kenshin and Runa Dantes. The second set of direct siblings in the Book of the Shadows, in many respects the story runs along at Runa's pace. I originally said I would cover May and Sisi, today, but I've still got to work out how many spoilers I'll include there. So, without further adieu, Kenshin and Runa...
Kenshin Inasha Dantes is an expert swordsman. He is considered to be the oldest of his generation of the Rosencraft family. Like the others, he too can trace his ancestry back to the originators, though that process is lengthy and fairly roundabout. Except for Yami, Anzu, and Rini, this is the case for every member of the Rosencraft family of this generation.
Kenshin once served as a political adviser to Yami, later as the king of a territory adjacent to Sancrien (modern day Crystal Point). Kenshin and Yami first met when Kenshin was a teenager.
Kenshin's childhood was rather normal until he became a teen. He did normal things, lived completely normally, without every knowing he had any talent for magic. That all ended in his early teen years when his mother stabbed him in the chest. He can't remember the moments after very clearly, but does remember seeing his mother crying and apologizing to him as he was bleeding out. Kenshin awakens later, seemingly not any worse for wear.
Kenshin almost immediately comes under attack, fighting off his attackers with his newly realized powers. In this confrontation he overhears talk of finding his sister. Kenshin goes on a journey to find out who that supposed sister is and why his mother stabbed him.
Serenity 'Runa' Inasha Dantes is Kenshin's sister, considered to be his younger sister. Her and Kenshin were separated at birth, though neither knew this until after awakening to their powers. Their lives ended up very similar to one another. Their childhoods were normal, devoid of any true appearance of magical ability. Like Kenshin, Runa was stabbed in the chest by her mother.
After her awakening, Runa was targeted, the same as Kenshin was. She became the focal point of a larger plan, one which Kenshin would work to put an end to. Kenshin had much trouble in tracking down Runa, however. With both their parents dead and no real leads to go on, Kenshin wasn't even sure what his sister looked like. Furthermore, at the time her mother stabbed her, Runa released several Soul Fragments.
Runa's pursuer, in chasing after her, ended up chasing after these Soul Fragments too. Kenshin didn't fully understand what these Soul Fragments were, but lent them aide anyway. However, many ended up being killed by Runa's pursuer since they were judged to be useless.
Runa was eventually captured and a plan was put in place to use her powers to wipe out humanity on Earth and become the mother of a new generation of Lucifer Hawk/human hybrids. She wound up nearly killing her captor, but nevertheless decided she would pursue the idea anyway alongside her brother since she believed she would never be accepted by humans as she was. Kenshin fights with her, and after overpowering her and winning their fight, convinces her to abandon her plan for destroying humanity.
However, since that time Runa has insisted that she has not given up on the idea of marrying her brother. She spent the next eighteen months with her brother constantly, but at his urging eventually decided to go our into the world on her own to find her own way. She occasionally would return seeking to get him to agree to their marriage. He would prepare opponents for her to face under the contract that if she won she would get to marry him. However, he always comes up with another opponent at some point, so the contract never ends up fulfilled. She has since gained an infatuation with Yugi, determining it is alright if she pursues both Yugi and her brother.
Both Kenshin and Runa are very intelligent, and powerful. They are not as powerful overall as the likes of Yami, Anzu and Rini. However, Kenshin is likely the best in pure swordsmanship, becoming Rini's teacher at one point. Runa, on the other hand, is particularly good at curses and incantations.
Runa was the first to codify a set of rules and formulate a game out of the stories about the Shadow Duel creatures. She would expand upon the actual monsters, and further create additional monsters, and translating spells that were used by mages into the game's magic and trap cards. The game was very small and not particularly popular in the time of the Sancrien Kingdom, mainly because of the fear that playing the game would allow even a novice to conjure the monsters. However, after the seal of the Shadow Items abated, she awoke once more and recreated the game and a company to manage the release of the game and its various associated products. At the moment Runa's company, Shadow Duel Enterprise, is the largest corporation in the world, partly because of the game itself, but also because of the technology that she developed to go along with the card game, which her company holds exclusive control over and licenses to other companies.
Although Kenshin's basic character is based on Kenshin Himura from Samurai X, his background is mainly based on Kyouske Date of the anime The Soul Taker. Runa is based on Runa of the same anime, though she somewhat fills the role of Pegasus and Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh by way of her status with the card game.
That's that for today. Tomorrow will be May and Sisi.
Today's soundtrack is my personal collection. This is today's sample track. Depending on how old you are you might be more familiar with this one.
