Christmas In July

Merry Christmas in July! No, it's not a "real" holiday, but you can still enjoy it like one, especially since it falls on a Friday this year.

There are a few theories on the origin of the not-a-real-holiday holiday. One attributes it to a North Carolina Girl Scout  troop in 1933. Another pegs it as a natural reaction to the growth of the holiday, which celebrates winter, and the fact that winter for the southern half of the planet is during the northern hemisphere's summer months. So, if you're in Australia or South Africa and want to got walking in a winter wonderland, or dream of a white Christmas, the only way is if you celebrate the holiday in your winter. July happens to be the height of snowfall for Australia.

For those of us who still have the actual day in December to look forward to, this day is more about adding a Christmas theme to regular summertime fun; eggnog spiked with your favorite colada, mistletoe made of cherries, snowmen made of sand at the beach, and even getting in the spirit with some holiday tunes. You can even pull out some lights to decorate if you'd like. But, there's no need to worry about presents or huge feasts. You're probably better off making it another grilling holiday like Memorial Day, Labor Day, or Independence Day. And though it'd be nice if you could get together with your family, just giving them a call or dropping them an e-mail to say hi and catch up a few months before the real big get-together holidays would be nice too.

So, enjoy the summer weekend. Merry Half-Christmas!!
