Sorry For the Silence

Hot damn is it annoying to go through so much bad news all at once. I'll start by making an apology.
A couple Fridays ago I was supposed to have the next chapter of Book III up on FanFiction.net. That day there was a minor emergency at work. The long and short of it was that I didn't get home until much later than I expected and was too tired to deal with anything, so I didn't get to it. I planned on getting up the next morning - my day off - and trying making the apology for the one day delay.

Well, as lick would have it, we had some rough weather in the area that day (thunderstorms). Bad idea to use a desktop during weather like that, even if you have a UPS (the battery backup kind, not the delivery kind). Given that the cable internet hookup is not on a battery backup, can't really do any uploading or that sorta thing anyway if the power's blinking out every few minutes. So I couldn't do much all day.

Then I had work the next few days, which was a shame since we had beautiful weather.

Then another day off, which I had to dedicate to my advanced degree coursework. Then, back to paid work. Had more bad weather move through that afternoon which ended up killing the land line phone system and likely crippling one of our older TV sets.

By the next afternoon when I was able to finally attempt look at uploading the story, turns out I had a bunch of corrupted files. Is there a connection? I doubt it. My PC is off when I'm not using it, just from a power saving perspective. It's plugged into a surge protected battery backup. It's not likely a power issue could effect some files on a single drive without damaging the drive itself. The damage seems to have been limited to a couple dozen office documents and about 50 or so image files in a couple folders. No real clear rhyme or reason to why those files in particular.

In any event I've had to do some recovery work. I do have backups of all of my written work and most of my image files. But as you might be able to imagine, it can take time to do the process of checking your system after such a mess to make sure you don't have a bunch of other corrupted files somewhere, and trying to find out how it happened in the first place. It's not quite as simple as just restoring from the backups because if you don't know what the problem was or how it happened, how do you prevent it from happening again. Juggling work and university work hasn't left a whole lot of time to do all that stuff, hence I've had to delay as long as I have.

I've just about completed the recovery process, done all the checks and whatnot. There was some minor loss of work product. It was essentially anything I started on or was working with over the prior couple weeks between full backups. I'm considering if I should do more regular full backups.

So, at any rate, I am apologizing for not having the story up when I said I would. I'm also apologizing for taking so long to communicate about why there was a delay.

As a sort of recompense, I will be releasing three chapters this Saturday instead of just the one. I would do it today, but after spending yesterday still doing recovery work and university work, and having work today and tomorrow, Saturday is the earliest I can get it done.

I still plan on an additional chapter for Cromwell Universe at the end of the month, so tentatively look forward to that as well.  Hope you didn't miss me too much, and thanks for sticking by.
