Mana Anzai Art Project, Part 5

I took a few days off to work on other projects, including what may be an official new major story for the Book of the Shadows. But, now I'm back with another update on the project.
In my last post a week ago I went over my process on adding skin tone. Today I wrap up the major in-fill parts of the project; the book, the buttons, the pointer, the glasses, and eh eyes. First up is the book.

This is really simple and direct. I could've tried to do something a little extra and simulate the faded off-white for the pages, but I didn't feel that was necessary given the relatively limited detail. I'm thinking I'll go back and add some sort of hidden message in the book's text.

This was also really simple. There are four button-like adornments on the skirt, and one button on the cuff of the sleeve. I chose to go with a golden yellow. Nothing really fancy here aside from remembering where that top button on the left was supposed to be precisely.

The pointer was a slightly thought provoking endeavor. It is meant to be simple, as it's just a pointer. But I had to think a bit about changing the design because it ended up looking more like a magic wand. I wasn't sure that changing the color any would change that impression, which left changing the design as the only recourse - which as you can see above I didn't do. I'm taking a liking to bringing back a little of the magic theme to an image based on the Dark Magician Girl.

Lastly, the eyes and glasses. I originally planned to do the eyes and glasses on separate layers. However, the shape and position of the glasses was off so I wanted to fix it. That fix made it troublesome to do them on separate layers, and I figured there was no real reason they had to be split up. I tried to do something a little different with her eye color, so the red is actually a pure red, but I set the opacity to about 75%.

And that's all the parts that need color. Felt like there was more to fill in, but that is it. So, what I did next was go back and change the visibility on every layers except the original raster that was the background. I went to each layer and changed the blend mode to multiply. If you start at the top and work down, you'd see each layer filled in by the color you used in that layer. For the sake of some future experiments I saved this result as a new file. This is what the end result looks like;

At this size in this blog, you can't see it all that well, but there are some problems with the colors at the boundaries, anywhere color meets outline. Things like that are finishers that make a picture look like a true quality project, so I will have to go back and clean that up.

Something else you can notice even at this size is that there are places where the outline isn't all that great. the line breaks up because the scanner didn't pick up the pencil line of the original drawing very well. That was obvious the entire time during the in-fill stages. Generally I retrace the lines at the very start, but for this project I decided to leave it to the end because tools like despeckle, salt and pepper filter, and artifact removal, help fill in a lot of those gaps.

Finally, there are a few mistakes that need to be fixed. For example, with Mana's left eye (to the right in the picture) a spot that should be the whites of her eyes above the rim of her glasses is instead colored skin tone, making it look as if her eyes are misshapen. A little further up from there color is missing just below the existing hairline. I'll have to figure out what that color is supposed to be and fill that in. Only once all of that is done can this image be considered complete. I'll be doing that the next few days.

Hope you'll be back to see the fully finished piece.
