Falling Leaves
A preview of a new project to be released next weekend.
I have had several projects in the works for the past few weeks. I originally mentioned this one some time ago, when this was intended to be a picture released for the spring season in mind. However, delays and my inability to work on it quickly eroded that idea. I tentatively considered it for the summer afterwards, but timing still was not right in terms of my ability to put pencil to paper and work on the drawing.
So I recast the backdrop for this piece I was working on. The original title was to be "Sleeping Beauties Among the Flowers of Spring", and be one of the few pieces I have done meant to represent any period within the Book of the Shadows. I have done only a few pictures of Rini, and several more of Anzu, but few of the sisters from the First Moon Saga together. I had an idea for a rather tranquil one and the idea placing it in a spring setting, but as I said time was not on my side for this past spring, and I didn't want to wait for next.
Summer was an option, and I could have pushed a little harder to get it done for the unofficial end of summer in the States, Labor Day. But I already had a summer season project from last year that I have also been trying to work on to little progress. That being said, I decided instead I wanted to try a season I hadn't worked with. I have a couple winter/Christmas themed pieces, I have the aforementioned summer one. I have a Valentine's Day one, which somewhat straddles the winter and spring boundary, but fall is a uniquely placid season to draw.
It's drab yet colorful, quiet yet busy. Fall is the season where the flowers and leaves start to wilt and die, falling to the ground. This creates the sort of drab feeling, a very dull, earthy tone. But it is colorful, an array of reds and browns and greens that draws people up north to see the changing leaves the way people gather to watch the cherry blossoms blooming in spring. Fall is that quiet time, where things start to slow down, but it's busy, and frantic, with the rush to do so many things before winter sets in, not to mention the gauntlet of holidays that mark the closing act just before fall's end and winder's beginning.
But, that poetic waxing aside, I decided to take a stab at an autumn theme without delving into the obvious territory or a Halloween setting. That being said, the end product, in terms of the drawing, is a bit understated. Lack of color doesn't help, and unfortunately there is no way I'll be able to colorize this piece before fall officially starts in a week. Even if I weren't involved with a number of other projects right now, saying I would have time to finish that level of detail by year's end would be a little much.
Nevertheless, I do have this piece to share come next week. I am previewing it here now in its unfinished form. I have to isolate the lineart, remove the scratches and eraser marks, finish lines, add a bit of detail, and other bits of cleanup, but this is the combined scanned image I drew, entitled Sleeping Beauty Beneath the Fallen Leaves;
I should have the cleaup done in time for the official start of Autumn in one week, at which time you'll be able to find this piece on DeviantArt as usual. I'll also have a post up sometime afterwards discussing the state of this blog and of the website, BookoftheShadows.com.
