The Corpse Bride
I had to take a break, and this was sort of what came from it.
Between work, and studying for law school mid-terms, i needed to take a quick breather. Haven't had time for much else but school and work, barely even time to sleep. But I really needed to do something relaxing, and drawing is one of those relaxation activities.
There was a story I was working on towards the end of the summer. It's another entry into the Cromwell Universe of stories. It's a fairly twisted story that involves a lot of salacious circumstances, and ultimately becomes a story of a choice between the peace and prosperity of the world, and the sacrifice of lives for a single person's greed and lust.

This may be one of the people at the center of the whole event. I don't have a proper name for her yet, but in the chapters I'm talking about here, she may be the character who goes by the title of Corpse Bride. The Corpse Bride is at the center of a legend, a system by which she crawled from the mounds of the dead in the planet''s darkest days, and became the central pillar supporting peace and bounty of the world as the planet's only witch.
This is an original character appearance wise and story wise. I'm thinking her hair will be orange, probably some layering of tones, or off-color striping (like the bang on her left being a different shade than the rest of her hair or something like that). If she is the Corpse Bride, part of her story is that her eyes seem to glow, as if giving off light. For that reason I feel like I have to use a light color, but I want to avoid blue and red. I don't really want to use yellow either, but I've been thinking orange to match her hair might be a nice match. But, that'll all come later. As I said, this drawing was a sort of relaxer. I haven't thought through it all that much yet.
Even without that tale, this piece is special in that it checks off two firsts for me. One, it is the first picture I've drawn entirely in Adobe Sketchbook. It's a free app, with the ability to subscribe to the full version for about $30 a year, that is available in the Windows Store (and I think Android too). It's by no means as robust as Photoshop, but it's not exactly MS Paint either. Its title sums it up very well. If you're just looking for a sketching program on your tablet, or even on your PC with pen input, it's a pretty awesome program.
Second, I finally got my hands on the sort of device I've long wanted - a touch display that accurately receives pen input. This one also happens to be versatile as a tablet and a laptop, albeit a little smaller than would have made it perfect in my book. And all for a non wallet-busting price. The device is the Lenovo Miix 700. It really is my favorite tech purchase of the last several years, and completely makes up for the failure that was my purchase of the Viewsonic thing a few years back.
This image is the first attempt I've made at drawing on this 2-in-1, using this specific program. Based on this experience, I'll quite possibly do all my drawing on this tablet from now on. There are a few kinks I'll need to work out, mainly on the software side, as I'm not 100% sure Sketchbook (at least the free version) has everything I need. It might be in there, but I just haven't found it yet - mainly canvas resizing.
In any event, gotta get back to studying, so I'll end here. Remember to check back on Halloween. I have another drawing ready to go, in my classic pen, paper, and scanner format, for this upcoming holiday. Somewhat reasonable chance it may be the last piece I release this year. Hope you enjoy this one, and look forward to the next.
