The Art of Art

I don't like art in the way people who go to museums like art. You couldn't ask me to describe the artistic motif or the use of color or the use of brush strokes, pen strokes, or what have you in any piece of art. I don't tend to see things like that with the depth to comment on quality or utility.

But I do like art in the abstract (not necessarily abstract art). I can appreciate art in the aesthetic sense, even if I can't get into it in a technical sense. I feel that is what makes the difference between me being a decent, above average artist, and me being a really good artist.

There is a website where people with much more talent and creativity than me submit their work. Okay, actually there are several websites like that, but this one is one of my favorites. It is called Minitokyo.net, and it is focused on anime, video game, and manga artwork. Much of the work there is free to download, and I have in the past used a number of pieces for wallpapers on my desktop. There is also DeviantArt.com which is a very large database of art of all sorts. You can even sell your own art there, or buy someone else's.

This link will take you to Minitokyo, and this link should take you to DeviantArt.

The image above was uploaded to said site. It is relatively new. I completed it about a month ago.

The individual depicted is a character of my story. Her name is Athena. It's a tentative name for now. This image is part of a developing larger image called Gathering of the Two-Six. Spoiler alert - she is a main character in my story and the title tells you how many more there are in the final portrait.

Athena's appearance, and to some extent her personality, are based around the Boa Hancock from the One Piece series. Using the image below as a reference, I drew the one above, which in its final form is supposed to represent her and the rest of the Two-Six gathered together on a couch interacting with one another. That seems pretty mundane, but within the scope of my story it's a fairly significant event.

As you can see in the picture beside Hancock, I have a picture of Aozaki Aoko of Mahou Tsukai no Yoru. It is her dress that I adapted for Athena to wear. There really is no answer to why I chose Aoko's dress, only to say that it was what came to mind at the time. It seemed to match her well and match the overall theme of the larger portrait I am working towards.

At any rate, in the near future I will have another image to share. I hope everyone can appreciate these pieces, and if so inclined offer some comments, suggestions, or critiques.
